CAARA, Building Our Future: A Special Request

As we approach our membership renewal season, I find myself reflecting on what makes the Cape Ann Amateur Radio Association so special. Whether it is providing vital emergency communications during storms, supporting local events like the road races, or simply mentoring a new Ham to get their first license, CAARA does incredible work. We are a cornerstone of the Cape Ann community.

To ensure we can continue this work for decades to come, I am writing to you today with a candid update on our finances and a request for your help.

The Financial Picture

For many years, we have proudly kept our membership dues flat. We believe that amateur radio should be accessible to everyone, and we have resisted raising rates despite the economic climate. However, as you know, the cost of everything—from heating oil to electricity—has risen significantly with inflation.

Currently, our membership dues allow us to just break even on our basic operating costs. While this keeps the lights on and the repeaters humming, it leaves very little in reserve for capital improvements or unexpected challenges.

Two Critical Needs

This year, we are facing two major financial hurdles that require us to look beyond our standard dues:

  1. Leveraging the CPC Grant: We have been incredibly fortunate to be considered for a grant from the Gloucester Community Preservation Committee. This is a massive win for the club! However, to unlock the full potential of this grant, we need to provide matching funds. We need to show that the club has "skin in the game" to secure these outside dollars.
  2. The Clubhouse Roof: Our beloved clubhouse needs a roof refresh. This is no longer something we can defer. If we do not address the roof proactively, we face the very real threat of significant increases in our property insurance premiums—or worse, coverage issues. Fixing the roof now is the fiscally responsible choice to protect the club long-term.

A History of Giving

CAARA has a beautiful history. We enjoy our current facilities because previous generations of members stepped up when the club found itself in need. They gave of their time, their skills, and their wallets to build the legacy we enjoy today.

Now, it is our turn to be the stewards of that legacy.

How You Can Help

I am asking every member to consider making a voluntary contribution on top of their membership renewal this year. No amount is too small; participation is what matters.

We are not mandating a dues increase because we trust in the generosity of this group. If you are in a position to give a little extra (or a lot extra ;-) ) to help us match the grant and fix the roof, you will be directly securing the future of CAARA.

Thank you for your membership, your passion for radio, and your dedication to Cape Ann.
